- Jennifer Grey said she hasn't watched ex-fiancé Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial.
- "I don't even know where it would be," she said on Tuesday's episode of Tamron Hall's talk show.
- She names Depp in her book but said she would've been "happier" using pseudonyms for everyone.
"Dirty Dancing" star Jennifer Grey has been talking about her ex-fiancé Johnny Depp and his defamation trial with Amber Heard while promoting her memoir "Out of the Corner," but she admitted on Tuesday's "Tamron Hall" that she hasn't watched the trial.
"I will say that I haven't watched any of it. I don't even know how to, I don't even know how to get Court TV, I don't even know where it would be," she told host Tamron Hall.
"But from clips or things that I've come across, I don't recognize the person and it's nothing to do with anything that I've ever experienced," Grey continued. "And I just — it makes me sad and I don't understand what's going on and I just want everyone to be okay."
Grey confirmed for Hall that she was engaged to Matthew Broderick and Depp during different parts of the same month in 1988. She wrote in her memoir that she broke up with Broderick after being involved in a fatal car crash with him in Ireland that killed two people and nearly killed him. Soon after breaking it off with Broderick, she was introduced to Depp by her agent and the new couple was engaged within two weeks of starting their romantic relationship.
Grey opened up to Hall about why she decided to include stories about both Broderick and Depp in the book. "I changed a lot of people's names in the book and if I could've changed everyone's names I would have been happier," she said. "'Cause what I'm doing is I'm only talking about the people that changed my life in very, very serious ways..."
"I had to write my version of the story. Everyone has a right to tell their story," she continued. "And all I do is talk about my choices, my part, how it affected me."
The "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" star said she loved "every single person that I've written about in the book" and that her goal in writing it was to reflect on how her own choices within those relationships and how they impacted her path in life.
Depp and Heard are currently in the midst of a legal battle because in 2019, Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard over Heard's 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she described herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse."
In the lawsuit, Depp claims that Heard is lying about the fact that there was domestic abuse in their relationship to further her own acting career and hurt his reputation and career. Heard doesn't name Depp in the Washington Post, but his lawyers have said it was "plainly" about him and has "devastated" his career and caused him to face "public scorn."
Heard has countersued Depp and says that he physically abused her throughout their relationship. The former couple broke up in 2016.
Grey told Hall that she didn't experience any behavior from Depp that is similar to what she is reading in headlines now.
In her book, she shares an excerpt from a journal entry she wrote at the beginning of their relationship. "On August 12, I wrote in my journal, 'I'm in love, pretty sure for the first time in my life ... He's kind, funny, smart, moral, thoughtful, respectful,'" she wrote.
But the former "Dancing With the Stars" champion also wrote that there was a harsher side of Depp.
"He'd started missing his flights home to LA having overslept or, when he did come home, he'd be crazy jealous and paranoid about what I'd been up to while he was gone," she wrote in another excerpt of the book originally published by The Independent.
Grey wrote that she ended her nine-month engagement to Depp via a note that she left in his hotel room after he left for a meeting one day and didn't return or make an attempt to contact her.
